The Museum of Bags and Purses Dutch : Tassenmuseum Amsterdamis a museum devoted to the history of bags, purses, and their related accessories.
Located in Amsterdam 's historic central canal belt, the museum's collection includes over 5, items dating back to the sixteenth-century. One of only three museums across the globe specialising in this field, it houses the world's largest collection of bags and purses.
Hendrikje Ivo, an antique dealer from Amstelveenbought her first bag in the mids. A small tortoiseshell bag inlaid with mother of pearl dating from the s, it was the beginning of a lifelong passion. Together with her husband Heinz, Hendrikje collected more than 3, bags before deciding to open part of the collection to the public. The first Museum of Bags and Purses consisted of two rooms in the Ivos' own house in Amstelveen, where it remained for ten years. It was very much a family business, with their daughter, Sigrid, an art historian, developing the museum's informative content.
However, as the collection continued to grow, it became apparent that new premises were required. A donor came forward, and offered the museum its present location on the Herengracht. The museum recently began a large-scale renovation project of its permanent collection.
The third floor of the museum, which houses the museum's collection of objects dating from the sixteenth- to the nineteenth-century, was reopened on the 24th of April Today, the Museum of Bags and Purses is a world-renowned institution that saw almostvisitors in The highlights of the museum's collection are on permanent display on the second and third floors, whilst the lower levels are used for temporary exhibitions.
Recent exhibitions have included "Accessories Are a Girl's Best Friend", which was made in collaboration with the Rijksmuseumand "Made In Italy, which was the museum's first use of clothing in an exhibition. Today, the collection contains over 5, bags. In March ofthe museum announced it had hired Manon Schaap as director following the retirement of Sigrid Ivo a year earlier.
A graduate of ArtEZSchaap began her career as a creative director in Paris at the trendforcasting office of Lidewij Edelkoortbefore collaborating with designer Jil Sander for several years and establishing her own studio in The position marks a new phase for the museum; upon the announcement, Schaap said "The Museum of Bags and Purses has an incredible amount of potential.
Together with an enthusiastic team I am working on a challenging program with new stories, sparkling presentations and room for experimentation. Since Junethe Museum of Bags and Purses has been located in a traditional 17th-century canal house. The house was built by Cornelis de Graeffan influential city councillor who was appointed mayor of Amsterdam ten times. At an auction inDe Graeff bought two building plots on the Herengracht.
This led to the creation of a uniform row of houses. It is the only example of this throughout the entire canal belt, which is famous for its eclectic mix of gabeled housing. Cornelis de Graeff passed away shortly afterwards, leaving his son Pieter de Graeff to continue the building project. The first stone of Herengracht was laid on the 17th of April Pieter de Graeff was every bit as illustrious as his parents. He also served as an Amsterdam city councillor, as well as being the brother-in-law of the famous statesman Johan de Wittand together with his wife moved in the highest circles of the Dutch Republic.
The two surviving period rooms were decorated during Pieter de Graeff's time. The five ceiling paintings in the smaller period room were painted by Paulus de Fouchier around The central panel depicts a woman representing the city of Amsterdam, surrounded by allegorical representations of EuropeAsiaAfrica and the Americas. Oceania is not represented due to it still being unknown to the West at the time of painting. By that time, the De Graeff family had accumulated a substantial fortune, through inheritance and trading with the Dutch East Indies.I haven't been able to come up with anything online.

Where can I store my luggage in Amsterdam?
Hi, I advise you to take a look at the some of the streetmarkets in Amsterdamthere are stands with suitcases etc. I know for sure that there is at least one stand at the Albert Cuyp Market. Here some info regarding markets: iamsterdam. Yep, various stands and at least on shop attached on Albert Cuyp market : Luggage4all, Albert Cuypstraat have good service.
I've noticed a stall selling bags and luggage on the Saturday morning Lindengracht general market on previous visits. It's just round the corner from the excellent Saturday morning farmer's market on Noordermarkt too.
Both markets are well worth a visit even if you aren't looking for anything in particular, to soak up the atmosphere.
Second the Albert Cuyp. Probably on the Dappermarkt too, maybe even cheaper. Don't expect it to last though. I bought a piece of luggage at Albert Cuyp Walk the entire market. I found my luggage 10 euro less at a stand a located right around the middle of the action.
Yes, Albert Cuyp market sells a lot of crap. Luggage4all which I mentioned earlier though, also sell good brands like Eastpak and other brands, some with life-long warantee.
A zipper of my Eastpak gave, and got repaired for free. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. Where to buy luggage in Amsterdam? Watch this Topic. Browse forums All Browse by destination. Amsterdam forums.
