Now a seven-country study has found that the magnetic fields in electric vehicles pose no danger as their EMF levels are below recommended standards. The dangers of electromagnetic fields in hybrid and electric vehicles began emerging on internet forums as soon as the first car began appearing on our roads. According to a report by Jim Motavalli in the New York Timesa number of hybrid owners tested their cars for electromagnetic fields using hand-held meters and were alarmed by the results.
But the latest study, led by Norway-based Sintef, argues these concerns have been blown out of proportion. EMF levels in seven different electric cars, one hydrogen-powered car, two petrol-fuelled cars and one diesel-fuelled car were measured in the laboratory and during road tests. Sensors picked up a burst of radiation that same level, when the cars were started. Measurements taken at head-height - using a test dummy with sensors located in the head, chest and feet - were shown to be less than two per cent of the recommended value.
A number of studies have linked EMF exposure with serious health issues, including a possible risk cancer, miscarriage, depression and a higher risk of leukaemia among children. In the case of petrol and diesel powered cars, exposure was measured at around 10 per cent of the exposure levels considered to be safe.

As you can see from the chart, coming in just second place with only a slightly higher specific absorption rate, is the Samsung Galaxy Note with a SAR rating of just. This is by far the lowest radiation smartphone by a major manufacturer. It used to be that the FCC mandated that cell phone manufacturers only use antennas that transmitted in all directions, known as omnidirectional antennas.
In the FCC changed its rule, in part to protect hearing aids from the radiation emitted from th e omnidirectional antenna, and no longer required that phone manufacturers use this time of antenna. This was not only a transformational upgrade for Samsung, but something brand new to the industry.

First of all, these SAR standards were set almost 25 years ago, when cell phones, and our understanding of the dangers of EMF radiation, were far different. Secondly, SAR standards are only designed to protect users from the dangers of the heat generated by microwave radiation. These standards do not account for the non-ionizing radiation that we now know is harmful, especially via long-term exposure. Consequently, cell phones cannot be reliably compared to their overall exposure characteristics on the basis of a single SAR value.
There are quite a few ways to check the SAR Rating of a mobile phone, which is why I wrote this post that outlines 7 different ways. Essentially all phone manufacturers are required to have this code protocol that communicates information about the device to the service provider.

However, one of the absolute best things you can do is to get a quality EMF protection case for your phone. Without taking sides, we conducted a study of our own, not to settle the question about human health risk but to measure EMF levels in the hybrid cars in our test fleet.
